This publication presents the history of the Sonderkommando in Auschwitz — prisoners forced to work in the crematoria and directly confronted with the extermination process. Based on survivor accounts and analysis of archival documents, the book reconstructs events from 1940, when the first crematorium in Auschwitz was put into operation, until the evacuation of the camp in 1945.

The author presents the tragic history of eyewitnesses of Nazi crimes, their daily life and work, and the extremely difficult conditions they faced. The publication includes documents, many of which are published for the first time, offering a valuable contribution to Holocaust research and Auschwitz history.

Approximately 1,800–2,000 prisoners were forced to work in the Sonderkommando during the camp’s operation, and only about 50–60 survived. This book provides one of the most complete historical analyses of the Auschwitz Sonderkommando.
