This publication, based on more than 110 previously unpublished or little-known documents, examines the rapid expansion of the Auschwitz camp complex between 1942 and 1945.
During this period, Auschwitz became one of the largest construction sites in occupied Europe. In Birkenau, brick and wooden barracks intended to hold up to 200,000 prisoners were erected at great speed, while the entire infrastructure of the camp — including water supply systems, sewage networks, and treatment facilities — was continuously expanded.
At the same time, the Nazi authorities selected Auschwitz as the principal center for the extermination of European Jews, leading to the construction of massive gas chambers and crematoria. The book also documents the involvement of numerous German companies participating in the enlargement of the camp complex and shows how the approach of the Eastern Front in 1944 gradually slowed many of the SS construction projects.
Based on extensive archival materials, this volume provides a detailed and disturbing insight into the scale, organization, and industrial character of the Auschwitz-Birkenau complex during World War II.
