Antique Japanese Katagami Kimono Stencil Katazome Japanese Katagami is a stencil pattern for dyeing textiles used for printing designs and patterns on kimonos and other fabric items. Using traditional mulberry washi paper, this katagami stencil features a simple set of vertical striped lines. There are very thin silk threads holding the delicate pattern in place.This antique Katagami was designed in Central Japan during the mid- or late Edo period (1860) to the early Meiji period (1900). It is made of two or more layers of handmade mulberry washi paper laminated together and waterproofed with persimmon tannin. Katagami printing uses a technique called resist dyeing, in which a paste is applied to the fabric with the katagami before dipping it in ink. The open space on the katagami will be a negative space in the printed design.
