On December 16-17, 1982, Rio de Janeiro and Sao Paulo, Brazil became the first South American cities to receive direct American Airlines service from its Dallas / Fort Worth hub, more than a year after the Civil Aeronautics Board had awarded the route. A McDonnell-Douglas DC-10 made the inaugural nonstop flight from Dallas/Fort Worth to Rio de Janeiro.
