MAR 24, 1936 PITTSBURGH PIRATES V. SAN ANTONIO MISSIONS BROADSIDE
Unique and rare item promoting an exhibition contest between the National League's Pittsburgh Pirates and the San Antonio Missions, an unaffiliated Double-A team playing in the Texas League. Perhaps as a favor to a politician, or the opening of a new ballpark, the game was scheduled in Laredo, Texas.
(Note the spelling of Pittsburgh as "Pittsburg," a common error in the early part of the 20th Century.)
Broadsides like this one, typically posted on telephone polls near a ballpark or in a local bar, rarely survived because they were only temporary signs often printed on thin paper stock. But in 1936, the Pirates temporarily moved their spring training camp from San Bernardino, California to San Antonio, Texas, which apparently is how they came to schedule an exhibition game with the Missions two hours south in Laredo--and perhaps this rare occasion is why the broadside has survived for the past 90 years.
Broadside measures 7 1/4 x 10 1/2 and is professionally matted in an attractive 11 1/2 x 15" black wood frame with a lacquered finish.
VG-EX or better condition w/ minor paper loss, some tears, and presumably discoloration from age. Frame is like new with no evidence of scratches, wear, or damage.
