For the first time in over a year USAir expanded its route
system by inaugurating service to a new point, rather than by acquiring an
airline. In December 1986, USAir had agreed to purchase Pacific Southwest
Airways (PSA). Later in March 1987, USAir purchased Piedmont Airlines. On
August 2, 1987 it became the only carrier to offer nonstop service between New
York and Ottawa. The philatelic announcement stated that the flight was
scheduled for August 1, but it actually occurred on August 2.
A BAC 1-11 was used and official cachets were provided at all
three New York points.
This cover was carried on the inaugural USAir flight from the United Nations Post Office in New York to Ottawa, Ontario, Canada (where it was backstamped) and is listed in The American Air Mail Catalogue as AL-D92Wu.
On February 14, 2013, US Airways Group and AMR Corporation announced that the two companies would merge to form the largest airline in the world. The combined airline carries the American Airlines name.
