
Hamble Penny Post Entire from Charles Philip Yorke later Postmaster General
1840 (February 4th) letter from Charles Yorke in Southampton to his wife at Wimpole Hall in Arrington. The envelope signed Hardwicke in lower corner handstruck Hamble/Penny Post endorsed Prepaid with manuscript 1 in red and PAID/3 FE 3/1840 circular datestamp. The letter commences My Dear Suzy ... and continues regarding the Precedence question which was being discussed in the House of Lords (this was six days before the marriage of Queen Victoria and Prince Albert) he was writing in the House of Lords and mentioned that he had just seen the Duke of Wellington and is signed off Your devoted Charles. Admiral Charles Philip Yorke 4th Earl of Hardwicke (1799-1873) was a British naval commander and Conservative politician. He was a member of Lord Derbys cabinet in 1852 as Postmaster General.
