Union Pacific Fruit Express (UPFE #460135) is a 57-foot mechanical refrigerator car, historically used to transport temperature-sensitive perishable goods. Historically, it was built in the 1960s and 1970s by manufacturers like Pacific Car and Foundry. Union Pacific Fruit Express originated from Pacific Fruit Express (PFE), which was founded in 1906 as a massive joint venture between the Union Pacific and Southern Pacific railroads. By the late 1960s, railroads began shifting to diesel-powered mechanical cooling, which could maintain much colder and more reliable temperatures. In 1978, the original PFE partnership was dissolved. The assets were divided, resulting in the creation of the Union Pacific Fruit Express (UPFE) company for the Union Pacific's half of the rolling stock. Then, in the late 1980s and early 1990s, Union Pacific engaged in extensive rebuild and renumbering programs for their mechanical fleet. Cars within the UPFE 460000 series are part of these later-era mechanical refrigerator rebuilds. This car comes with Kadee couplers and is ready to run.
