Highly regarded as tricksters or yōkai (supernatural creatures with godlike powers), they are renowned for possessing paranormal abilities, the most prominent being the power to shapeshift into human forms.

Kitsune are said to live for hundreds or even thousands of years, growing wiser and more powerful as they age. As a new tail sprouts every 100 years, a kitsune can possess up to nine tails (kyūbi no kitsune).
