On July 23, 1947, the first direct air mail service between the United States and Damascus, Syria was inaugurated by the Clipper “Golden Fleece,” via Gander, Limerick, and London.

The Syrian postal service prepared an official cachet for the return flight covers.

This cover was carried on the inaugural Foreign Air Mail Route 18 flight from Damascus, Syria to Gander, Newfoundland, Canada (where it was backstamped) and is listed in the Foreign Air Mail Flights (FAM) Section of The American Air Mail Catalogue as F18-85d.
