Clock Diary Carriage Companion in Sterling Silver
The carriage companion is designed as a combined timekeeping and stationery accessory, intended for use while travelling by horse drawn carriage. The exterior is fitted with a sterling silver front and a Moroccan leather rear, complete with an original carriage strap for securing the piece during travel. The silver mount is hallmarked London by Goldsmiths and Silversmiths Co Ltd and bears the date letter e for 1900.
The front features an aperture housing the pocket watch for timekeeping alongside an ivorine type writing panel labelled appointments, allowing notes to be made while in transit. Opening the case reveals a deep blue velvet lined interior, and the pocket watch can be removed for continued use once the journey has ended.
Carriage companions of this type were produced for wealthy Victorian travellers and reflect the practical requirements of long distance travel at the turn of the twentieth century. Combining a clock, diary and protective case, this example represents a specialised accessory associated with private carriage travel and personal organisation.
