Onyx Cigarette Box
The Onyx Cigarette Box by Betjemann is an Art Deco example produced by George Betjemann & Sons during the mid twentieth century circa 1935.
Of rectangular form, the Cigarette Box is constructed from solid onyx with softly rounded edges and a clean geometric profile characteristic of the Art Deco period. The exterior is finished with a contrasting malachite thumb tab mounted to the front edge used for opening the lid, providing a striking contrast between the pale banded onyx and deep green malachite.
Opening the Cigarette Box reveals a fitted interior designed for the storage of cigarettes and smoking accessories. The lid is fitted with a high quality gold plated brass hinge engraved “Betjemann’s Patent No. 449335 Made in England” confirming manufacture by the renowned luxury box makers George Betjemann & Sons.
The clean lines, contrasting stone surfaces and quality Betjemann patent hinge are characteristic of well made Art Deco smoking accessories produced during the 1930s.
