pin 1 Tx audio to the radio
pin 3 PTT (pulls low to send a Selcall)
pin 5 Rx fixed level unsquelched audio in from the radio
pin 6 Ground
pin 7 +12v from radio
pin 9 (optional for ICOM CAT equipped radios)
Keyboard Interface:
Standard PS/2 keyboard
Transmit functions:
Press the button to send selcalls.
Selcall Numbers are entered using a PS/2 keyboard.
Text messages are entered using a PS/2 keyboard.
Selcall, Beacon, GPS req, Status req, Telcall or Msg are selected using the keyboard.
Data is retained in EEPROM, keyboard is only required if Selcall details are altered.
Receive functions:
If a selcall is received to Mycall, the LEDs blink alternately and the switched output pulls low 5 times.
The most recently received selcall is retained in EEPROM.
All selcall traffic on the channel is displayed on the LCD.
Recieved selcalls ending in 00 are treated as Group Calls.
9600 baud TTL level Serial output for logging all selcall traffic.
LED status indicators:
Blinking green - incoming Selcall or outgoing Selcall
Bliniking green & blinking red - I have received Mycall and sent a Revertive.
(hit Enter on the keyboard to reset)
Red hard on - keyboard mode (monitoring for keystrokes)
Green periodically changing state - normal Rx mode
Universal HF Selcall Controller Operation:
-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
The Selcall Controller is normally powered from the radio, however any 8v -20v DC supply can be used.
The keyboard is used to update the Mycall and Target selcall numbers.
The RED Led will go hard on in Keyboard mode, which indicates the Selcall Controller is reading the keyboard key strokes.
The RED Led will go out after 5 seconds and the unit will revert to monitoring for incoming selcalls.
Hit any key to enter keyboard mode, ie. wake up the keyboard.
The RED LED comes on, ie: I am decoding keyboard entry, not decoding incoming selcalls.
Edit the My call and Target call selcall numbers to suit.
Hit the ESC key to enter the Setup Mode selection.
Setup Mode. Hit
S B M G R T or P
There are more options available than visibile on the screen:
S Selcall mode
T Telcall mode (codan format)
V Version (displays s/ware bversion)
X Send a selcall now ( equivalent pressing the Button )
B Beacon mode
M Message mode ==> Also goes through to write the 32 char text message
P Previous Rx'ed selcall numbers & data
R Request Status from another Barrett
G GPS request from another Barrett or Skippy
L logging verbose mode for Rx/Tx selcall data (serial port logging)*
K Keyboard Slow timer ( remains in keyboard mode for longer, for slow typists ) *
* Options K and L revert to standard settings on the next power off/on cycle.
All settings are retained in EEPROM, so when the unit boots up from cold, the last used Selcall numbers and Message will be loaded up.
Once the desired Selcall numbers and Mode have been selected, press the Button to send the Selcall. Or Hit ESC then X.
If the Tx Selcall parameters are unchanged then the PS/2 keyboard is not required.
If the unit receives a Selcall sent to its Mycall selcall number the LEDs blink alternately and the switched output will cycle 5 times.
The switched output is for driving a horn alert relay. The switched output is diode protected, and suitable for driving a small 5v relay.
Factory Reset: To clear all EEPROM data and reset the unit, hold the Button in whilst powering up the unit.
* The Previous function displays the most recently received selcall, and displays the selcall message type. This information is retained in EEPROM, the next valid incoming selcall will overwite the data.
120 = Selcall
123 = Beacon call
100 = Codan/Qmac Telcall
102 = Barrett Telcall & Codan Message
103 = Status request
104 = Hang up
110 = Barrett Status data
116 = Barrett text message
121 = Barrett GPS data
117 = EOM end of message
Special Functions only available with ICOM CAT equiped radios:
-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
ICOM radios do not need to use the PS/2 Keyboard, other than to update a text or telcall message.
Tested with ICOM IC706(all), IC7000, IC7100, IC7200, IC7300. Not suitable for IC9700
The ICOM Radio CAT address needs to be set to 48hex (IC706 default) and ICOM Radio CAT baud rate set to 4800.
Keyboard is only required to enter or update a Text or Telcall Message, otherwise optional.
Selcall, Beacon call, GPS request & Status request are selected by MEM 51.
Send a Selcall via channel up/down buttons on the Microphone.
Adds a Codan style Roger Beep.
Mycall & Target call numbers are stored in MEM 40.
MEM 41 is the default boot-up channel.
On bootup the selcall controller will read ICOM memories 40, 41 and 51 and write 6.100.000 into memory 39.
ICOM Memory 40 contains the Selcall numbers and will overwrite the values read from the Selcall Controllers EEPROM.
eg. if ICOM MEM 40 contains 12345678 then Mycall will be 1234 and the Target call will be 5678.
Memory 41 is the default boot up channel, can be any frequency and mode.
Memory 51 selects the Tx Selcall mode.
If ICOM memory 51 contains 1000000 the Selcall controller will be in Selcall mode
If ICOM memory 51 contains 1000001 the Selcall controller will be in Beacon mode
If ICOM memory 51 contains 1000003 the Selcall controller will be in GPS request mode
If ICOM memory 51 contains 1000004 the Selcall controller will be in Message mode
If ICOM memory 51 contains 1000007 the Selcall controller will be in Status request mode
Additional method of sending a selcall with ICOM radios, using the channel Up/Down buttons on the microphone:
Two clicks down to MEM39 with 6.100.000 then two clicks back up to MEM41 the call channel and then hit PTT.
If done within 5 seconds will send the selcall.
Hit PTT to reset the blinking LEDs, after a Selcall has been received.
