Today I am offering this fabulous vintage Dogon double rider equestrian bronze or brass metal art sculpture.
This awesome piece has the following features:
The craftsmanship highlights traditional casting.
Beneath the dark patina, the bronze or brass metal is most visible on the horse's noses and side limbs reflecting decades of handling and appreciation.
Portions of the exterior prominently features what appears to be a matte, powdery looking red laterite surface substance. It shows minor beautiful variegation consistent with its approximate later mid-century age and traditional West African handling. It doesn't rub off.
It has a a bit of visible casting core inside the rear rider's lap cavity. I believe this is baked earthen clay, proving traditional regional lost wax manufacturing methods.
This piece reflects artisan hand-finishing including visible hand-tooling and steel file marks. That includes on the underside of the feet where casting sprues were manually leveled. There is a unique natural casting gas pocket or metal buildup flaw on one hoof, indicative of hand-cast tribal art.
This sculpture is mostly likely a 20th-century vintage work (circa 1960s–1970s).
