🚗 What is Fordite?

Fordite, also known as Detroit Agate or Motor Agate, is not a natural gemstone. It is a man-made material formed from decades of built-up automotive paint.

• The Layering Process: In old automotive factories, cars were hand-spray painted on tracks. The overspray repeatedly collected on the metal staging racks.
• The Baking Process: Each time a car went into the oven to cure, the paint overspray on the racks was baked and hardened.
• The Discovery: After hundreds of layers accumulated, the rock-hard paint crust was chipped off the frames. Lapidary artists eventually realized that cutting and polishing this industrial waste revealed beautiful, swirling psychedelic patterns.

🔍 Key Visual Characteristics

• Graduated Design: The beads scale sequentially from small sizes at the collar down to a much larger focal bead at the center.
• Striated Banding: The concentric stripes represent different colors of cars painted on the assembly line, locking a literal timeline of automotive history into each bead.
