RARE Tohono Oodham Whirling Logs Handled Basket / Native American Papago Tray with Whirlwind Design, circa 1940s.
SYMBOLISM: The whirling logs or whirlwind is an ancient design among the Tohono Oodham Nation, as well as the Navajo and Pueblo Indian tribes of the Southwestern United States. The interconnected geometric symbols represent the four cardinal directions, the changing of seasons, and the cycle of life with the circular motion connoting balance and harmony among the elements and within the soul. The symbol is used to evoke good luck, protection, and well-being and is connected to the hero's journey and the realization of healing knowledge.
