This is a nice Epiphone Electar Century/Coronet Lap Steel electric guitar that was manufactured in the United States prior to WWII sometime between 1939 and 1940. This body style is fairly rare and was only produced for a short period of time. These lap steels were very similar in appearance to the Gibson Mastertone lap steels that were being produced at the same time. This guitar is in great shape for its age and included its original "chip board" case that is also in great shape. Many of these lap steels suffer cosmetic damage with flaking paint and severe wear, but this example is very nice with honest wear but no significant paint damage or excessive wear. Here are some highlighted features:
- Original "Bikini" style Epiphone logo on headstock
- Original white pick guard is present (although it is cracked as seen in pictures, which is common)
- Original tuners
- Original pickup, pots and wiring (functional)
Although I am not a lap steel player, I did test the electronics and they seem fully functional with no known issues. The cable jack, while functional, does seem a bit loose but it is not causing any issues (we believe the jack is also original). The back cover is present, but the fabric material on the back cover shows evidence of potential moth damage. This seems to be common with these lap steels. The serial number is present on the back of the headstock. The strings are older and are dead, so it will need to be restrung. The case closes properly and all of the latches are present and functional.
I purchased this from the daughter of who was likely the original owner. They knew that it was in the family since the 1950's at a minimum. It well seldom played and was never gigged, which likely contributes to its better than average condition. These are very cool vintage lap steels and significantly better than anything that can be bought today. This is a real American made vintage Epiphone and not one of the modern reproductions.
This is being sold through an auction with a penny start and NO RESERVE! Good luck to all and please do not hesitate to reach out with any questions.
