In it’s first inaugural in almost five years for the airline, TWA extended a New York - Madrid flight to the Spanish coast resort of Malaga.
No cachet was prepared but the dispatch
of uncacheted covers only by the New York Airfield was authorized.
This cover was carried on the inaugural Foreign Air Mail Route 27 flight from the John F Kennedy Airport Mail Facility in New York to Malaga, Spain (where it was backstamped) and is listed in the Foreign Air Mail (FAM) Section of The American Air Mail Catalogue as F27-220F.
In January 2001, Trans World Airlines filed for a third and final bankruptcy and was acquired by American Airlines. American Airlines laid off many former TWA employees in the wake of the September 11, 2001 attacks. TWA continued to exist as an LLC under American Airlines until July 1, 2003 at which time all operations were integrated into American Airlines.
