This vintage (early-mid 20th century) fur coat is beautiful but does have some blemishes where is has come apart from the backing over the years from normal use and wear. The specific problem areas come in both shoulders, the arms have some slight splitting pelt and other small various locations may be present undiscovered during processing. Would recommend being looked over by a furrier to repair these portions and let this piece last another 100 years! Ben (Bela) Ruhig immigrated to the United States (Chicago) in the early 1900s and opened up a fur shop. The earliest newspaper ad for the business I could find was from 1921 and the newest ad I could locate was from 1951. A 1950 census confirms the information on the business and location as well, very cool pieces of history and beautiful coat! Documentation of these findings in listing photos as well!
I believe it is silver fox from what I have researched but happy to listen to opinions as well on this. There are hook clasps on the inside of the jacket and there is also one pocket on the interior, right side. While dating it, I have seen other similar styles dated in the 1930s but I cannot determine the exact time of production on this piece but I wouldn’t imagine much after the years of the early 50s based on the lack of business advertising presence and the age of the furrier in the 1950 census. (Listing will be updated if I come across any additional information.)
Definitely made to fit a smaller build and overall stature. Measurements in photos for reference at various points in the exterior of the piece.
