Union Typwriter Co.
In America, the manufacture of the Caligraph had meanwhile passed into the hands of the Union Tywriter Co., which brought the "1900 New Century" machine to the market.
It was a model which, through the improvements made to the mechanics, presented many improvements and new features. The New Century keyboard consisted of 84 keys spread over 7 rows. The protruding part on the front has been abandoned.
The machine had an automatic change of ribbon direction. This was narrower than the previous model and could be completely disabled when using stencil.
A new left and right margin device with end of line buzzer which could also be removed.
The paper is transported using a rubber cylinder. The paper feed could be deactivated which allowed precise adjustment.
Despite its very sophisticated equipment for its time, the New Century could not grasp the “big steps”. The very clear preponderance of the Remington on the market, the knowledge of the superiority of the communications machine compared to the full keyboard model, as well as the visibility of the writing, forced the manufacturers, in 1906, to stop manufacturing it.
