Extremely Rare Original Circa 1927 Route 66 Arizona Road Trip Photo Collection - Lot of 24 Vintage Photographs - True Time Capsule of the Mother Road's Toughest Stretch
For sale is a remarkable, cohesive set of original black & white photographs taken during a personal automobile journey along the newly designated U.S. Route 66 in western Arizona, circa 1927 (1927 seen on license plate tag in a photo from same album) — just one year after its official establishment in 1926. Some of these images document one of the most challenging and scenic sections of the entire Mother Road: the dramatic climb over the Black Mountains via Sitgreaves Pass (Oatman Highway).
This alignment featured steep grades (up to 12%), hairpin "Arizona Sidewinder" turns, and rugged desert terrain that tested early cars to their limits. Many 1920s travelers needed local help or towing to cross it. Photos from this exact stretch so early in Route 66's history are exceptionally scarce. These provide an intimate, first-hand record of the highway's infancy when it was mostly unpaved gravel and dirt.
Photos measure approximately 2.5 x 4.25 inches. All but three are affixed to black album paper (can be removed fairly easily).
Specific Scenes Visible in the Collection:
- Oatman, Arizona Gold Mining Boomtown: A clear view of Main Street featuring the landmark Arizona Hotel (originally the Durlin Hotel, rebuilt in 1924 at 181 Main Street after the 1921 fire). This two-story adobe building — the only one of its kind in Mohave County — served miners and early Route 66 travelers and is now on the National Register of Historic Places. It later gained fame as the honeymoon spot for Clark Gable and Carole Lombard in 1939.
- Bird's-Eye Panoramic Views: Elevated overlooks of towns/settlements (possibly Kingman and/or Seligman) — classic 1920s traveler shots of the desert landscape.
- Black Mountains & Sitgreaves Pass Area (Oatman Highway): Photographs taken along the rugged Route 66 alignment through the Black Mountains, showing travelers posing beside unpaved dirt roads, mountain overlooks, and sweeping desert vistas. This section was one of the most challenging and scenic parts of early Route 66, known for its steep grades and dramatic high desert landscape.
- Tom Reed Mine: Direct views of the active Tom Reed Gold Mine operations in the hills surrounding the town — one of the richest and most visible gold mines in the Oatman district during the 1920s.
- Scenic Overlook Sign ("Top O' the World Drive"): A traveler posing next to a period sign at a high viewpoint — capturing the thrill of cresting the mountain passes.
- Infrastructure in Progress: Rare image of bridge or highway construction, showing the rapid development along the new Route 66 corridor.
- Bridge Construction & Hoisting Scene: Dramatic original photograph showing workers using ropes and cables to hoist or carefully position a large bus or heavy truck on a wooden trestle bridge spanning a desert wash. This captures the intensive labor and engineering required to build infrastructure for the new U.S. Route 66 through Arizona’s rugged terrain.
- Desert Travel Life: A traveler posed among tall ocotillo plants in a labeled "Arizona Desert" photo, plus roadside scenes with period autos and 1920s attire.
Why This Collection Is Special & Valuable:
- Rarity: Early 1927 documentation of this specific treacherous Black Mountains/Sitgreaves Pass stretch is incredibly hard to find. The Oatman Highway (a Historic Back Country Byway today) was chosen partly due to mining interests and represents pure pioneering adventure on the Mother Road.
- Centennial Interest: With Route 66's 100th anniversary in 2026, demand from museums (such as the Kingman Route 66 Museum), historians, authors, and private collectors is surging.
- Unified Narrative: The cohesive story - desert crossings, mountain scenery through active mining country, town stops, and road-building — creates a powerful time capsule of early automobile tourism in the American Southwest.
Ideal for serious Route 66 / Mother Road collectors, Oatman and Arizona mining history enthusiasts, or institutions preserving transportation history. These images vividly bring the spirit of the open road and Western expansion to life.
