Hello and welcome to The House of Chrome.
You are looking at a classic 2nd generation (1960's era) Electro Voice 664 dynamic cardioid microphone. Often referred to as "The Buchanan Hammer" salesman would demonstrate it's toughness and reliability by pounding nails into a piece wood with the mic then hooking it up to show that it would still work without issue. This microphone was not used as a hammer...obviously and shows extremely lite wear from use over the decades. It comes with a short custom cable in which to operate.
Pic # 2 shows the 664 along with several other very popular E.V models and their basic characteristics.
It should be noted right away that though the mic is 100% complete. It has been tested and works like new with zero issues. It's best used as a vocal mic for singing and broadcasting as it was intended but this is a High Impedance mic. More on that in a second.
The 664 was a revolutionary, high quality studio mic being tough, reliable, great sounding and having a uni-directional pattern only picking up what was directly in front of the microphone cancelling out all background noise. It was the standard for all other mics of it's era and sounds as good as most quality mics built today if the 664 is in good working order but being that this mic is Hi Z it's basically void of bass. This mic will give you that old school "rockabilly" tone that you'd hear from the 40 and 50's. If you want a 664 with warm tone and bass then you want to get a Low Z 664.
A lot of audio equipment back in the day had the Hi Z inputs like a HAM radio or guitar amp and so this Hi Z 664 was compatible for that. The E.V 664 is a dual Z mic and technically it could be wired for either or but almost every 664 sold was factory set at either Hi Z or Low Z so just because you build a cable to one or the other doesn't mean that it will work on your 664. Foe example, this Hi Z 664 will not work with a Low Z 4 pin cable because the Hi Z setting on the mic is from the wiring being set at Hi Z within the mic itself. I hope you understand?
I get a lot of people asking me about this so if you buy a 664 make sure you understand which setting you are getting because the Hi Z and Low Z 664 mics have completely different tones to them.
The polished chrome body on this 664 shows very lite wear in the form of a few scuff marks & tiny scratches. The 664 label looks very nice with lite wear and completely legible. The front screen is free of odors, tarnish or deformation. A new inner pop filter was installed as well. The on / off switch works perfect as well.
The joint mechanism works perfectly with plenty of tension and it's adjustable via side screw. The on / off switch was cleaned and works just as it should and slides smoothly. The threading for the cable and stand are perfect...nothing stripped or fractured.
I would rate this mic a very conservative 8 + physically speaking on a scale of 1 - 10. Some would rate higher. They very rarely come this nice.
There is a short 6 inch Belden 8422 model cable included that's soft, pliable and in excellent condition with the standard male Swithccraft XLR end connector. Simply leave the 4 pin cable screwed onto the mic at all times then attach any longer XLR cable of choice as an extension. It's a practical set up and you'll never have to worry about ruining the threading on the actual mic.
The 664 will screw onto any desk or floor stand you choose. I would seriously suggest using a heavy desk or floor stand as this mic is very top heavy. If you need something that compatible please just ask and I'll show you what I have in my store.
MICROPHONE STAND SHOWN IS NOT PART OF THIS SALE...USED FOR DISPLAY PURPOSES ONLY.
As with all my other vintage microphones...
