Vintage Frankoma Pottery 5NS Square Serving Dish-Desert Gold 8.5"-Plainsman MCM

Condition: good preowned with a small pottery flaw, see photo

Material: Sapulpa Clay

Features: This Frankoma 5NS bowl is a classic example of Mid-Century Modern (MCM) American pottery. Its features combine a minimalist aesthetic with high durability, making it popular for both display and daily use.  A "soft square" shape with rounded corners and slightly flared sides, characteristic of the Plainsman and Westwind lines designed by John Frank.   It is finished with a Desert Gold Glaze which is a vibrant, warm yellow glaze with a "rutile" effect, meaning the darker clay underneath subtly peeks through the edges and high points to create a two-tone, textured look.  It is constructed from the Salpulpa Red Clay.  The unglazed base shows the deep brick-red clay sourced from Sapulpa, Oklahoma. This material is what gives Frankoma its signature weight and "earthy" feel.   While mass-produced, these were hand-dipped in glaze, so each piece has slight variations in color depth and "break" over the edges.  This piece was constructed somewhere between 1950 and 1980.
