These special L brackets have long slots for the screws making them far easier to install than standard L brackets you find at the hardware store.

For most pieces of furniture, two brackets are sufficient. A particularly wide/long piece of furniture might need more than two. 

Ikea includes them with their Billy bookcases, but these could be used for securing other pieces of furniture as well.
