This 1990 Ford Mustang Fox-body is a 5.0-litre V8 automatic convertible project, finished in Ford white with a black power-operated soft top. It came to us as a part-exchange vehicle and presents as a usable classic American convertible with scope for further improvement.
The Fox-body Mustang has become increasingly relevant among enthusiasts. Earlier 1960s and 1970s Mustangs now sit beyond many grassroots budgets, so the third-generation Mustang offers a more accessible route into V8 Mustang ownership. It also gives buyers fuel injection, stronger parts support and more modern road manners than many older American classics.
This car uses Ford’s 5.0-litre fuel-injected V8 engine, paired with an automatic transmission. The electronic fuel injection system improves cold starting, throttle response and day-to-day drivability compared with earlier carburettor-fed engines. In addition, the automatic gearbox suits the convertible character of the car and makes it easy to use in normal road conditions.
The specification includes power steering, power-assisted brakes, cruise control and working air conditioning. These features make a meaningful difference to usability. The steering feels lighter at low speed, while the brake assistance gives the car a more modern feel than many older classic vehicles.
The electric soft top operates correctly and can be seen working in the accompanying video. The black roof material presents very well, with no noted rips or tears. It also contrasts cleanly against the white bodywork, giving the car a correct late-period Fox Mustang appearance.
The exterior remains in good overall condition for its age. However, there is a small area of surface corrosion on the passenger-side rear wheel arch. A paint refresh would improve the presentation and suits the project nature of the car. Importantly, this is not being described as a finished show car.
The alloy wheels are in very good condition and the tyres are almost new. As a result, the car sits well and has a usable road stance without looking heavily modified. The wheel and tyre package also supports the car’s practical, driver-focused character.
Inside, the cabin presents well. The front and rear seats are in unmarked condition, which is a strong point for a convertible of this age. The general trim condition gives the car a solid base for continued use, light restoration or gradual improvement.
On the road, the Mustang drives well. The assisted steering, power brakes, fuel-injected V8 and automatic transmission make it feel more approachable than many older classic American cars. It remains a project vehicle, but it is also a usable V8 convertible rather than a heavy restoration case.
The only issue we have identified is the passenger-side electric window, which does not currently operate. Otherwise, the car appears to be a sound and presentable Fox-body Mustang project. Any purchaser should still inspect the vehicle properly and satisfy themselves as to its condition.
The car is MOT’d until the end of November. With attention to the paintwork and the electric window fault, this 1990 Mustang convertible could become a very presentable and usable classic V8 Ford.
The car comes fully registered with a UK V5C document.
