Sometimes the Mint makes mistakes.

Sometimes collectors spend 80 years obsessing over them.

And sometimes both of those things create something awesome.

Offered here is a 1946 D/D Inverted D Jefferson Nickel, FS-501, certified PCGS MS65FS. This is one of the coolest and most recognizable post-war Jefferson RPM varieties out there, featuring the famous inverted underlying D mintmark punched beneath the primary mintmark.

And yes… once you see it, you cannot unsee it.

This variety happened when the Denver mintmark punch was impressed upside down before being corrected with a properly oriented D. Back in the 1940s these things were punched by hand, because apparently chaos was part of the production process.

The close-up photos show the underlying inverted D clearly tucked beneath the final mintmark. It is a genuinely neat variety with strong visibility and fantastic collector recognition.

But this coin is not just about the variety.

This thing has serious eye appeal.

The surfaces are booming with frosty luster and clean fields, while the reverse sports strong steps earning the coveted Full Steps designation from PCGS. Finding major Jefferson varieties with both technical quality and eye appeal gets surprisingly difficult once you move into higher-end grades.

Highlights:

• PCGS MS65FS

• Great combo coin for Jefferson specialists and variety collectors

A little Jefferson nickel trivia for your next awkward family gathering:

The Jefferson nickel was only 8 years old when this coin was struck. America had just exited World War II, mint production was ramping back up, and somewhere in Denver a mint employee accidentally created one of the most famous RPMs in the series.
