- Marine distance meter
by Henry Hughes & Sons. Can be referred to as a Stuart’s Marine Distance
Meter.
- Model #4701 and Pat
#703
- Black body with a black
bakelite handle.
- Rubber eyepiece.
- The meter measures 6
inches in total length x 3-1/4 inches across, including the handle x 3-1/2
inches in height.
- It weighs just about 2
pounds, unpackaged.
- The body of the meter
is in very good age-related condition. There is one crack on the bakelite
handle. The rubber eyepiece is not cracked but it is a bit brittle. The glass
face is unscratched. The hinge opens well. Round dial on the end rotates
easily.
- This is untested as far
as how it works mechanically.
- From a google search:
-
“Mechanism: The observer looks through an eyepiece, which includes a small
telescope, and manipulates a knob to make two images of the observed object
coincide.
- Readings: The distance
is then read from a scale, typically marked in "cables" (a nautical
unit of measurement, about 600 feet or one-tenth of a nautical mile). Another
scale is used to set the known height of the object in feet.
- Construction: The meter
typically features a black metal body with a bakelite handle and a rubber
eyepiece cup.”
