Ansel Adams (1902–1984) was an American photographer and environmentalist celebrated for his luminous black-and-white images of the American West. Born in San Francisco, he trained initially as a concert pianist before devoting himself to photography, drawn above all to the wilderness of Yosemite and the Sierra Nevada. Adams co-developed the Zone System, a method of precise exposure and tonal control that gave his prints their remarkable depth and clarity. A founder of the Group f/64, he championed sharp-focus, purist photography over the softer pictorial styles of his day. Beyond his art, he was a tireless conservationist whose efforts with the Sierra Club helped expand the national parks and shape public appreciation of the natural landscape. His majestic visions of mountains, deserts, and skies elevated photography as a fine art and endure as symbols of America's wild beauty.
