This is an enchanting lot of wonderful depression era "make-do" items, made from old grain sacks, dish towels, family fabric scraps, etc. They are all from the same Deep South family estate. I purchased these many years ago along with many kitchen items and sewing items from this estate. These pieces were so charming that I kept them but am now sorting through all my collections and offering this set for sale.
It includes a pin cushion "face", hand stitched from fabric scraps and stuffed with likely old hose or old scraps. There is one worn spot and I can't tell exactly what was used for stuffing for the pin cushion face.
There is another charming "turtle" pin cushion. The body is made from what looks like old muslin. I really think it was made from an old ironing board cover. The fabric has the old burn type marks long worn out ironing board covers would have. In that time period, old scrap cotton fabric would be used to cover and ironing board with lots of layers. I don't know what the stuffing is. The turtle was never used as a pin cushion because when I found it, the body had not been put into the gingham scrap turtle bag. You can easily insert it if you choose. Interestingly, a "face" was drawn on botht he muslin one and the gingham one! Note - the darkened marks on the interior turtle are just old burn marks. He is a clean item.
There is a potholder with a loop with a stitched root vegetable on it. This piece has hand and machine work. There are two "hot pads" - one made from grain sack material and the other from a fabric scrap, possibly a feedsack scrap that features stylized art deco kitchen items on a black background. One side is very worn.
The other really interesting item, is a "bag" with a loop and round top opening. It was made to hang, and is constructed primarily from two grain sack dish towel pieces. Likely it was for storing hosiery or scraps.
The last piece appears to be an old garment pocket possibly that was being made into a make - do, though still unfinished.
Items in lot - face pin cushion, turtle pin cushion and gingham cover, pot holder, unfinished pocket, fabric "bag" with string holder, black hot pdd and grain sack hot pad.
Really interesting old pieces that reflect the nature of that time period after the depression when people were struggling and used what they had. These items have both handwork and machine stitching.
