THE STABILO HISTORY
The STABILO BOSS HIGHLIGHTER range was introduced in 1971 by the GERMAN writing instruments manufacturer SCHWAN-STABILO. Its ICONIC FLAT, POCKET - FRIENDLY shape was accidentally created when a frustrated designer smashed a model of the pen with the palm of their hand.
Here is the history of the STABILO BOSS and its parent company. The Company ORIGINS are from 1855–1900. The company was founded in 1855 as a pencil factory ( GROSSBERGER & KURZ in Nuremberg, Germany.
The SWAN LOGO was DESIGNED In 1865 ( PLEASE SEE PHOTOS ). The Schwanhäußer family took over the business, they RE-BRANDED and renamed it Schwan Bleistift ( Swan Pencil Factory ) and adopted the famous swan emblem on ALL PRODUCTS and PACKAGING, which remains the company's TRADEMARK today.
The Birth of the Highlighter came about in 1971 during a business trip to the US, managing director Günter Schwanhäußer observed students using STANDARD FIBRE-TIP pens to UNDERLINE IMPORTANT words, sentences and passages. He REALISED a BROADER, BRIGHTER marker could do the job EASIER and BETTER.
He had the inspiration and the IDEA was BORN. SCHWAN- STABILO chemists and designers created a CONICAL shape from modeling clay. When Schwanhäußer saw it and was UNSATISFIED with the look, as mentioned previously a very ANNOYED designer SMASHED the CLAY MODEL with their hand, COMPLETELY flattening it. This distinctive ACCIDENT resulted in the FAMOUS FLAT shape of the STABILO BOSS Highlighter that is used to today.
To LAUNCH and PUSH the product in 1971, the company sent TRIAL HIGHLIGHTERS to over 1,000 opinion leaders, including the German Chancellor and various CEOs. The gamble PAID OFF making HIGHLIGHTING a standard practice and cementing the pen's place in the HISTORY books.
For DECADES, the POPULAR FLUORESCENT NEON YELLOW remained the BEST-SELLING colour, with over 1.8 billion units sold worldwide.
The company went through EXPANSION and MODERNISATION over the following years, the BRAND EVOLVED to include 14 PASTEL COLOURS and 9 FLUORESCENT COLOURS.
With the WORLD CHANGING and moving more to SUSTAINABLE products, the company introduced the STABILO GREEN BOSS range of products, a marker made from 83% RECYCLED plastic manufactured in Germany.
