A Kikori area spirit board (Gope); Gulf province Papua New Guinea. (C. 20th Century)
A tall carved wooden panel of typical form for the type, the board in a rust color with black and white designs which represent stylized heads depicted by bird imagery with geometric forms.
Such Gope boards were believed to be the abode of an Imunu, or spirit entity that is represented on the front, Many of the boards were cut from old war canoes.
Provenance: Acquired prior to 1966.
The Board Measures 37 inches tall x 9.5 inches wide.
