20 x Cream of Saskatchewan watermelon seeds
I love growing rare and unusual plants, particularly when they taste great. Video here:
This is a rare variety originally from Russia that emigrants took to Canada. It's flesh is very sweet and extremely juicy. It has extremely thin skin and you end up with a tiny amount of rind when you finish a slice. So far this seems to be a great all around open pollinated variety.
It's a convenient size of 2-4.5kg and 25cm in diameter so it will fit in a fridge - what's known as an "icebox melon". It grows quickly – approx 80 days according to the internets – and is very popular in colder climates. I'm in Central Queensland and it performed well for me so it can also take heat. Sow after threat of frost has passed.
The thump test doesn't work for this melon as even under-ripe melons will sound hollow. I think it's to do with the thin skin. I recommend harvesting them when the tendril where the fruit has set and the tendrils on the leaves immediately either side of it have died back.
This is the only member of the Cucurbit family that I had growing while these were planted so the seeds cannot have cross-pollinated with any other plant. Likewise going forward I won't be growing anything that may cross-pollinate with this variety.
I don't ship to W.A. or Tasmania.
