The name "stirrup cup" stems from a traditional parting drink offered to guest on horseback just before they departed. The name was related to the fact that riders had their feet firmly planted in their leather stirrups, they would quickly drink a parting glass of port, sherry or wine while still mounted.
These cups do not have a standard flat bottom because they were not intended to be set down on a table.  The drinker was expected to drain the beverage in a single draught before handing the vessel back to the host. (One for the road)
Animal themed stirrup cups (often featuring a fox stag hound or horse) peaked in popularity during the 1700s and 1800s.  Gucci revitalized this stirrup design in the 1970s by creating these highly collectible silver-plated versions made in Italy.
