This is a unique piece of Power Pop history from a unique band that pre-dates their Island Records recordings. Much deserving of critical acclaim, despite consumer indifference, Sparks influenced Power Pop bands such as Cheap Trick, especially in the looks department as well as both bands putting out some wonderful music. Sparks' influence could be felt all over the New Wave movement that emanated from England in the 80s.

In the early seventies brothers Ron and Russell Mael joined with another set of brothers, Earle and Jim Mankey, to form the band Halfnelson. Originally these tunes were released by the band when it was calling itself Halfnelson in 1971. Shortly after the release of their first album the group changed their name to 'Sparks'. The album was then re-released by in 1972 as Sparks. The new version of the album featured new artwork that was simpler, displaying the group in more of a classic profile superimposed against a red brick pattern. The single to this reissue "Wonder Girl," became a minor regional hit in Alabama and appeared on the lower end of the Cashbox chart at #92.

After a split, Ron and Russel Sparks went to England where they reformed into a Power Pop band, signed with Island Records and went on to much success in the UK. Fast forward, Sparks combined forces with Fritz Ferdinand to form the supergroup FFS, and released the fruits of their recording efforts in June of 2015.
