Product Description

Vintage Signed Okubo Sterling Silver Matchbox Sleeve Case – Elegant Hand-Engraved Monogram "G" – Includes Original Antique Swedish "Vulcan" Safety Match Box – Made in Post-WWII Occupied Japan Era

Up for online auction is a magnificent piece of mid-century tobaccoriana and military exchange history: an original vintage sterling silver matchbox sleeve (vesta case cover) by the renowned luxury silversmith firm Okubo. This heavy, solid sterling jacket features an incredibly rich, dark natural cabinet patina across both face panels. The front face is beautifully detailed with a highly artistic, hand-engraved flowing script monogram initial letter "G".

The silver sleeve comes complete with its original period insert: a vintage wooden "Vulcan" Impregnated Safety Matchbox, natively manufactured at the historic Tidaholm Match Factory in Sweden. The sleeve is engineered with custom open side channels so the matchbox's original friction-striking compound remains completely accessible while nested inside the silver armor.

Collector Validation & Hallmarks:

The lower rear edge of the sleeve is stamped with the crisp, official factory hallmark: STERLING OKUBO (fully detailed in close-up Photo #6). A premier, high-liquidity addition for advanced sterling silver novelty collectors, military occupation historians, or vintage smoking ephemera showcases.

Condition Report

Sterling Silver Sleeve: Very good antique condition. The structural lines are razor-straight with tight, even right-angle box seams and a clean, flat profile (Photo #2). The silver has taken on a gorgeous, heavily charactered dark volcanic tarnish and natural oxidation that provides incredible contrast against the polished engraved initial lines. No deep impact gouges, crushed side columns, or modern metal polish damage.

Vintage Swedish Matchbox: Good, honest antique ephemera condition for its age. The color lithographed paper label on the drawer box shows expected edge chipping, corner fraying, and a small torn section on the upper corner (Photo #4), but the graphics are bold and completely clear. The outer striking walls show honest wear from period match-striking use (Photo #3).
