Silas Weir Mitchell (1829-1914) of Philadelphia has been called by some the most versatile American since Ben jamin Franklin, having distinguished him-self not only as a physician but as a physiologist and literary figure as well.
Mitchell, the seventh doctor in three generations of his family, is principally remembered as a neurologist who created and developed a world-renowned rest cure for nervous diseases. He was the author of a number of now classic books, including Gunshot Wounds and Other Injuries of Nerves (1864), written with G. R. Morehouse and W. W. Keen and the first exhaustive study of the traumatic neuroses; A Treatise on Diseases of the Nervous System (1871), the first American neurology textbook, which passed through nine editions, and Injuries of Nerves (1872), an expansion and elaboration of the general subject that includes a survey of the current knowledge of anatomy and physiology of the peripheral nerve.
