Description

Sergei Pavlovich Korolev (December 30, 1906 [January 12, 1907], Zhitomir, Volyn Governorate, Russian Empire - January 14, 1966, Moscow, USSR) - Soviet scientist, designer of rocket and space systems. Twice Hero of Socialist Labor. Academician of the USSR Academy of Sciences (1958). Corresponding Member of the Academy of Artillery Sciences. Chairman of the Council of Chief Designers of the USSR (1946-1966). Lenin Prize laureate. Engineer Colonel.


One of the main creators of Soviet rocket and space technology, which ensured strategic parity and made the USSR an advanced rocket and space power, and one of the key figures in human exploration of space, one of the founders of practical astronautics. In official documents of the USSR, he was called simply "Chief Designer". Under his leadership, the launch of the first artificial Earth satellite and the ship piloted by the first cosmonaut Yuri Gagarin was organized and carried out.


In 1938, Korolev was arrested by the NKVD on false charges of counterrevolutionary activity. Investigators tortured and blackmailed him, threatening his family. Five weeks after his arrest, Korolev admitted his guilt, was declared an "enemy of the people" and sentenced to imprisonment in a correctional labor camp. He served part of his sentence in Kolyma and in prison-type design bureaus. He was released early in 1944 without rehabilitation; rehabilitated "for lack of evidence" in 1957.
