"
Born in 1745 near Philadelphia, Benjamin Rush was educated at the College of New Jersey (later Princeton University) and began his medical training as an apprentice to Dr. John Redman of Philadelphia, the foremost practitioner in the city. Following six years with Redman, Rush continued his study at Edinburgh, receiving his M.D. in 1768. From there he traveled to London, taking instruction from William Hunter, then on to Paris, where he visited the Hôtel de la Charité and the Hôtel Dieu.
Upon his return to Philadelphia in 1769, Rush established his own medical practice and was appointed professor of chemistry at the College of Philadel-phia (later the University of Pennsylvania Medical College), a position he held for twenty years. In 1789 and 1791 he was awarded, respectively, professorships of the practice of medicine and of physiology. Rush remained on the medical faculty at the college for the remainder of his life."
