THE HISTORY OF MINERS' DISEASES. A Medical and Social Interpretation

George Rosen, M.D

This special edition published 1995, originally published 1947

"Rosen (1910-1977) had perhaps his most remarkable impact as a social historian of medicine. He believed that diseases and epidemics of the past should not be studied in a vacuum but, rather, within their social, political, and economic contexts. According to Barbara J. Rosenkrantz, Ph.D., "this interpretive framework made sense of the past and gave him necessary perspective on the present." For, ultimately, Rosen regarded history for its utility and probed it to address more intelligently contemporary problems.

Rosen's vision of the past is manifest in The History of Miners' Diseases (1943), an early work in his study of the history of occupational medicine. Tracing the growth of knowledge of diseases of miners from neolithic times through the close of the nineteenth century, Rosen intends, as he writes in his preface, "to correlate the development of [knowledge of these diseases] with the advances of the basic medical sciences, and with the varying social and economic conditions that have contributed to the rise of occupational disease among miners."
