RESPERATION
J.S Haldane
Special Edition printed 2004, originally published 1922

"When John Scott Haldane (1860-1936) led colleagues from Oxford University on an Anglo-American expedition to Pike's Peak in Colorado, the physiologists were especially interested in studying the effects of high altitude and the mechanism of acclimatization.

Haldane, the nephew of physiologist Sir John Scott Burdon-Sanderson (1828-1905) and the father of physiologist J. B. S. Haldane (1892-1964), was born in Edinburgh. He obtained his M.D. from Edinburgh University but never practiced clinical medicine. Instead, he joined his uncle at Oxford, and though he remained there, the title of professor of physiology that had been his uncle's eluded him. He resigned from the university when the title was granted to Charles Sherrington.

Yale University honoured Haldane by selecting him to deliver the Silliman Lectures for the year 1915. Haldane writes, "I was asked to deal with the physiology of breathing and include a general account of the long series of investigations with which I had been associated on this subject and its practical applications in clinical medicine and hygiene." The lectures and the book based on them were delayed by World War I. When it was finally published in 1922, RESPIRATION was recognised as a landmark work.".
