ABOUT THIS PAINTING:

Striking mid-century portrait capturing solemn introspective gentleman dressed in grey suit and brown tie set against vibrant indigo background. Demonstrates characteristic approach—particularly strong geometric structure, bold expressive brushstrokes, sensitivity to color and form defining mature period. Composition demonstrates masterful balance between cool and warm tones: deep indigo background contrasts beautifully with warm hues of sitter's face and attire creating sense of quiet dignity and psychological presence. Chromatic interplay reflects influence of Paul Cézanne whose work profoundly shaped Rivoire's approach to portraiture and still life. Demonstrates careful study of form and ability to capture both physical likeness and inner character—qualities distinguishing portrait work throughout career.
