ABOUT LOUIS MUHLSTOCK (1904-2001):

Jewish Canadian artist, draftsman, painter best known for evocative depictions of Great Depression and sensitive figure studies. Born April 23, 1904, Narajow, Austria-Hungary. Immigrated Montréal 1911, worked family's fruit-importing business while pursuing art studying night at Monument National and Art Association of Montreal (now Montreal Museum of Fine Arts). Talent quickly gained recognition—1925 participated first exhibition Royal Canadian Academy. 1928 moved Paris spending three years refining skills under figure painter Louis Biloul at École des beaux-arts and sketching l'Académie de la Grande Chaumière in Montparnasse. Prestigious private art school previously nurtured artists Amedeo Modigliani and Jean-Paul Riopelle. During Paris time exhibited work various salons before returning Montréal 1931 establishing own studio and beginning teaching drawing. Deeply attuned to social realities created sensitive chalk and charcoal sketches of unemployed men in Fletcher's Field during Depression. WWII documented shipyard workers Montréal. Throughout 1950s and 1960s work widely exhibited including solo shows Montreal Museum of Fine Arts and Waddington Galleries. By 1970s artistic style evolved towards abstraction. Remained dedicated to painting until final days describing art as "moment in time only." Died August 26, 2001, Montréal.

RECOGNITION AND LEGACY:

Esteemed member Canadian Society of Graphic Artists, Canadian Group of Painters, Contemporary Arts Society, Canadian Society of Painters in Water Colour. Contributions to Canadian art earned numerous honors including Officer Order of Canada (1991) and Knight National Order of Québec (1998). Key figure Jewish Painters of Montreal collective whose works displayed galleries across Canada. Works held National Gallery of Canada.
