Product description
IBO statue of Nigeria. Original piece over 50 years old.
Igbos (or ibos) are one of the three large ethnic groups in Nigeria, of which they constitute about eighteen percent of the population. They are mainly located in the southeast part of the country (limited by Bénoué to the north and the Niger river to the west), but also constitute an important part of the population of the two main cities of the country: Lagos to the west and Kano in the north. Their languages are the IGBO and its different dialects.
One of the main characteristics of IGBO masks is that they are painted white color, the color of the mind (mmwo). One of the best known masks among the masks for the mind is the famous AGBOGHO (Woman) MMUO or MMWO (Spirit) which allows the IGBO to conceptualize the idea they have of the ideal young woman. The mask is worn by a man and is danced during harvest or sowing parties, also during funeral of important people.
