Product Description
Grebo mask from Liberia. Old piece over 30 years old. Delivered on base.
Grebo masks were distributed in Paris very early on. They particularly attracted the attention of Picasso who had a collection of African masks and who was inspired by a Grebo mask, purchased around 1908, to create in 1912 his famous work Guitar, the first Cubist sculpture.
Male masks with geometric shapes are often recognizable by their long noses framed by one, two or more pairs of protruding, tubular eyes, sometimes threatening in appearance. The features of feminine masks are softer, more harmonious and more serene.
