The cushion (or foam mat) inside a precision stamping tool, is essential because it provides the "give" necessary for photopolymer (clear) stamps to transfer crisp, complete images. Compensating for Stamp Materials: Traditional cling or wood-mounted red rubber stamps come with a built-in layer of foam, giving them flexibility. Clear stamps, however, are completely flat and lack this soft backing. The cushion in a stamping tool acts as a stand-in for that rubber foam, ensuring the stamp yields a bit when pressed Avoiding Uneven Pressure: Without a cushion, you might have to press down extremely hard to get solid ink coverage, which often leads to smudging or blurry, distorted edges. Accommodating Stamp Thickness: Many of these platforms feature a removable foam mat. For thin clear stamps, you leave the cushion in to raise your cardstock higher; for thicker red rubber stamps, you remove it to prevent over-stamping or forcing the hinge out of alignment. Comes with two magnets that I put washi tape on them for easy removal. These magnets are strong and I had a hard time getting them off. LOL
