1907 Japanese Beauty Ad Letter - Hair Removal - Scarce Marketing Relic

This document consists of an illustrated promotional letter and original envelope mailed in 1907 from the Japanese Importing Company, located at 193 Westminster Street, Providence, Rhode Island. The letter was addressed to Mrs. O. M. Mayo of Gum Spring, Virginia.

The envelope, postmarked April 27, 1907, in Providence, RI, bears a red 2-cent George Washington stamp and features striking red vertical text in Japanese 現世紀の新発明 ("A New Invention of This Century") alongside English type indicating the sender's location. On the back, two additional postmarks are present: one from Goochland, Virginia, dated April 29, and another from Gum Spring, Virginia, bearing the same date. These indicate the envelope's travel route and delivery confirmation.

The letter itself is printed on decorative company letterhead featuring an illustration of a woman, a man with an umbrella, two men flying a kite, and additional red-ink Japanese motifs. The text is designed to appear handwritten, using a cursive typeface that mimics penmanship. However, the only truly handwritten element is the date of the letter, reading 4/27/07. It is signed by Caroline Osgood, listed as the manager of the company, which advertised Japanese beauty products, specifically "Kulomi Japanese Toilet Articles" and a product called "Ta-Ka-Ha-Ra-Wa."

The content of the letter promotes a Japanese hair removal treatment and appeals directly to the recipient, presenting the message as if it were personally written. Despite being mass-produced, the illusion of intimacy and custom care is maintained through its design and tone. This type of marketing reflects early 20th-century strategies to sell exoticized foreign products to American consumers, particularly women.

Online searches reveal nothing about the Japanese Importing Company, Caroline Osgood, or Mrs. O. M. Mayo. This makes the letter and envelope not only a unique piece of advertising history but potentially one of the only surviving examples of this company’s existence.

This item provides valuable insight into period marketing practices, consumer culture, and the Western fascination with Japanese goods during the early 1900.
