This sterling silver spoon is most sought after spoon from Los Angeles California. It is dating to years around 1900 and is featuring on the top of handle figural lady with wings blowing on the trumpet, below leaves and various fruits and banner reading LOS ANGELES CAL down the handle. In the bowl it has most expertly hand engraved image of ostrich bird with tall neck, the writing is CALIFORNIA OSTRICH. Ostrich farms were established at that time in California and they were also popular tourist attractions. On the reverse of handle there are following very detailed images, starting on the top: back of the lady, then the territorial seal Seated Minerva, the Roman goddess of wisdom, overlooks the Sacramento River scene with ships and boats, Sierra Nevada Mountains in the background and grizzly bear in front. Above is the word EUREKA (Greek for "I have found it") refers to the discovery of gold (also the state motto), which brought the waves of outsiders to the sleepy shores of San Francisco, below more fruits, crossed mining tools and writing CALIFORNIA. All that on a handle!!! Measures 6-1/2” in length (164 mm), weighs 24.6 grams and in excellent condition. On the back marked STERLING and has hallmark with the old mark of H on a pennant for Mechanics Sterling Company, which was subsidiary of Watson Newell Co.
