Beautiful, high quality sterling silver spoon from Dallas Texas dating to years around 1900 featuring very detailed image of lone star of Texas state seal, below side view of bull or longhorn, then bale of cotton and writing TEXAS down the wavy handle. In the gold finished bowl it has most expertly hand engraved image of bare feet black man sitting on a bale of cotton playing banjo, hat on his head, the writing is HAPPY DAYS IN DIXIE, SAN ANTONIO. This spoon is an example of negative black stereotyping common at the turn of century (1900’s) that African American people were confronted with. This kind of spoon was refereed as N…… spoon. These types of spoons are hard to find! Condition of the spoon is excellent and measures 5-1/2 inch long (140 mm), weighs 22.4 grams. On the back marked STERLING and S as hallmark for Shepard Mfg. Co. Shipping on multiple purchases is gladly combined. Please see other, some rare, collector spoons I'm currently listing.
