This vintage Italian lidded box was crafted from striated red onyx, a material commonly called pink marble.  Hand assembled and polished smooth on all surfaces.  For its roughly 5 x 4 x 2-inch size, it is quite dense and heavy at just over 3 pounds.  Noted are natural distinctive striations and veining patterns.  

Boxes like this were very popular during the Mid-Century and Post-Modern eras for cigarette boxes, but today one serves equally well for a trinket or keepsake box.  

It is in very good condition save for a small, chipped off spot on an inside corner at a fracture of the stone when it was cut and polished.  It does no harm and is not visible from the outside..... almost not from the inside unless you are aware and looking for it.  Please see the photos to complete the description.
