HERBELOT de MOLAINVILLE, BARTHÉLEMY D'(1625-95), one of the first orientalists to produce a systematic survey and alphabetized account of Arabic, Persian, and Turkish literature with dictionaries for each language.French orientalist whose monumental four-volume encyclopedia, the Bibliothèque orientale (1697), was published posthumously by Antoine Galland (1646-1715), himself a noted orientalist and the first European translator of The Thousand and One Nights (see ALF LAYLA WA LAYLA). Writing at a time when Europeans considered “the Orient” as an exotic but undifferentiated locale, d'Herbélot was one of the first orientalists to produce a systematic survey and alphabetized account of Arabic, Persian, and Turkish literature with dictionaries for each language.

Gérard Edelinck (20 October 1640 (baptized) – 2 April 1707) was a copper-plate engraver and print publisher of Flemish origin, who worked in Paris from 1666 and became a naturalized French citizen in 1675.
